The Hon. Marilou McPhedran is a Canadian Senator, human rights lawyer, a tenured professor and the founding director of the Institute for International Women’s Rights at The University of Winnipeg Global College and was the founding director of the International Women’s Rights Project now at the Centre for Global Studies, University of Victoria in Canada, from 1998-2007. She is also the founding course director for the ‘Human Rights UniverCity’ summer program, in cooperation with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
Her previous appointments include the Ariel F. Sallows Chair in Human Rights at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law, Chief Commissioner of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission and Principal of The University of Winnipeg Global College.
Named a Member of the Order of Canada in 1985 in recognition of her co-leadership in the successful campaign for stronger gender equality protections in the Canadian constitution, Senator McPhedran is a specialist in human rights and systemic reform. In 2015 she chaired the Minister’s Task Force on Preventing Sexual Abuse of Patients for the Government of Ontario. Senator McPhedran has served as a research associate of GNWP since 2009 and is a member of the WILPF Academic Network.
