Women-led responses: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention
Mediating conflicts, building social cohesion
Despite the increased burden of care, reduced mobility and dwindling resources during COVID-19, women continued to carry out their peacebuilding work, including by mediating tensions that have emerged in their communities due to the pandemic.
In South Africa, the Winterveld Care Centre has created a group called Friends of Justice to “build peace on the streets”. They encouraged the communities to get to know each other and live in peace. Women peacebuilders have also addressed root causes of conflict and emerging tensions, such as food shortages, by distributing food packages and initiating micro-loans programs.
