Gender-Inclusive
Humanitarian Response
Wherever there are crises in the world, there are women’s nonprofits ready to help. However, women are systematically left out of making decisions and responding to crises that affect their communities.
The outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and its rapid spread across the world in early 2020, has brought forward the impacts that health and humanitarian emergencies can have on women’s human rights, and peace and security. It has a disproportionate impact on women and girls, aggravating domestic violence and increasing unpaid domestic labor and risk of exposure to the virus. GNWP works to ensure that women leaders get a seat at that table and have the resources, knowledge and skills to lead response in their communities.
Women and youth peacebuilders, supported by GNWP, have helped lead the following relief efforts:
- The Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh,
- The 2018 earthquake in Palu, Central Sulawesi in Indonesia,
- South Sudan humanitarian crises, and
- The COVID-19 pandemic response around the world.
Our advocacy and work are informed by the latest data and best practices on the topics of gender, conflict prevention, and humanitarian response. Through our COVID-19 and WPS Database, we track the impacts of crises, including COVID-19, on the global issues of women, peace and security.
